A guide to XML driven study guides
At the UvA in Amsterdam a system has been developped to create the study guide for the university. The system was built using JHeadstart, Oracle Toplink, Struts, JSP technology and an Oracle 9i database. Next to that Xopus is used to keep the XML valid. Their system delivers content for the website and for printed version of the study guides. One of their demands for this complex system was usabilty.
Usability is best managed when developers can control the user interface, rather than being stuck with those provided by the technologies that they use. "We were able to provide our editors with usability with Xopus, the WYSIWYG XML editor." says project manager Jan Repko.
Using XML and Xopus has brought an award for the "best XML driven website" according to the SGML/XML user group in the Netherlands to the University of Amsterdam.
